THE EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING

There’s been a lot of clamor off late about the effects of Global Warming. How real is this global warming threat? Is our planet really on the verge of a massive disaster of biblical proportions?

Well it is. And you better believe it. Our earth is a far warmer place today than it has been for centuries; causing the widespread melting of ice shelves and glaciers in different parts of the globe. If this overheating of the earth continues, it won’t be long before both ice caps melt completely and most of the world is covered by sea leading to untold loss of life and property.

So, why is our planet heating up? Well for those not in the know, the blame falls squarely on green house gases such as CO2. The increased levels of CO2 in our atmosphere are a direct result of the combustion of fossil fuels for our daily energy needs.

So what can we do to stop our planet from boiling over? Well, one hugely helpful option is to switch to cleaner and greener energy resources. Renewable energy seems like the perfect solution to environmental problems and a replacement for fast depleting fossil fuels for two main reasons:
1). It is renewable and therefore inexhaustible.
2). It is usually clean and doesn’t pollute the environment or contribute to global warming.

There are several different forms of Renewable energy. Some of the major forms are listed below:

Solar Energy: Solar power or Solar energy is one source of renewable energy that is available in unbound abundance. There are different ways of utilizing the limitless form of energy. You could directly use it by increasing the number of south facing windows to heat your home or you could convert it into electricity using photovoltaic cells.

Wind Energy: One of the fastest growing non-renewable energy resources, wind energy has been used for eons by humans all over the world and especially where high wind speeds are prevalent. Besides being just about the cleanest form of renewable energy, wind power actually costs much less than burning fossil fuels for electricity.

Biomass: Bio-energy or Biomass is actually another name for solar energy that has been processed and stored in organic materials like animal waste and plant matter. This form of energy, unlike fossil fuels, is renewable because it can be produced far more quickly.

Geothermal Energy: If the sun provides a renewable source of energy, so does our home planet. Geothermal energy is derived from the heat deep within the earth’s crust which heats and pushes underground water towards the surface in the form of steam and hot water. However, geothermal power is an extremely localized form of energy as it can only be found in certain parts of the world.

In the United States, heated groundwater resources, commonly found in the western part of the country; is often used to directly heat homes and buildings. The same resource is also used in power plants to generate electricity.

In conclusion, with fast disappearing fossil fuels and current state of the environment, renewable sources of energy like Solar, Wind, Geothermal and Biomass energy seem to be the likely saviors of our collective future as a species. But till these renewable sources of energy go mainstream, let’s all try and help in our own small ways to conserve energy wherever and whenever possible. Remember, energy conserved is too, energy created.
